Annie Thompson travelled to the British Showjumping Spring Championships with both Julia B and Ralf JR for a packed week of competition against some of the country’s leading combinations. The championships provided an excellent opportunity for both horses to gain valuable experience in a highly competitive atmosphere, with plenty of positives to take from the week.

The show began on Thursday with Annie and Julia B contesting the Winter Bronze League Direct Qualifier. The pair started positively and showed some lovely jumping throughout the class, but a few unfortunate poles kept them from achieving the result they were hoping for. Despite this, Julia B looked confident and careful around the track, giving Annie a solid start to the championships.

Saturday proved to be one of the busiest and most encouraging days of the week. Annie and Julia B returned for another Winter Bronze League Direct Qualifier and produced a much-improved performance. The partnership jumped a composed and stylish clear round in the first phase to secure their place in the jump-off amongst strong competition.

Heading into the jump-off, Annie looked set for a competitive finish before an unfortunate rider error resulted in a stop, alongside a pole on course. While it was not the outcome the pair had aimed for, there were still many positives to take away from the class, particularly the quality of the first-round clear and the confidence Julia B showed throughout.

Also competing on Saturday was Ralf JR in the Senior British Novice. Annie and Ralf JR produced a promising round, with the pair showing good rhythm and consistency around the course. Two poles unfortunately denied them a top placing, but the round highlighted the partnership’s growing confidence and potential.

The championships concluded on Sunday with both horses once again stepping into the arena. Julia B took on the National Winter Bronze League Championship, where Annie rode positively around what proved to be a demanding and technical track. The pair finished with two poles down but gained valuable championship experience against a strong field of competitors.

Ralf JR also returned to contest another Senior British Novice class to round off the show. Annie and Ralf JR delivered another encouraging performance, finishing with just a single pole. The round was a positive way to end the championships and demonstrated the progress the partnership is continuing to make.

Although the week did not bring the placings the team had hoped for, there were many encouraging performances and important learning experiences throughout the championships. Both Julia B and Ralf JR showed plenty of quality and promise, while Annie gained valuable mileage competing at a major national event. The experience and confidence built over the week will no doubt provide a strong foundation for the rest of the season.
